I caused quite a stir a year and a half ago when I reported that you could, using restraint with the options list, get a full-size 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 4MATIC for loaded Chevy Tahoe money.
The base price for that vehicle was $78,250, including destination.
There will be no such surprising revelations with the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 4MATIC. The price tag on this year's model is an even $87,000.
I could rant like your uncle on Facebook about inflation, but the fact of the matter is that this is a much more realistic price for the largest of the Mercedes SUVs, which, for 2024, gets a significant refresh.
Exterior updates include a bolder, shinier grille, aggressive-looking lower bumper with air intakes, and new LED taillights.
Under the hood, it's the same Mercedes-Benz 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six, with a mild bump in horsepower---from 369 to 375. Torque remains 369 lb-ft. And the 9-speed automatic transmission, AIRMATIC air suspension and 4MATIC all-wheel drive are unchanged.
Zero to 60 in 5.9 seconds. EPA fuel economy estimate 21 MPG city/highway combined.
Inside, ambient lighting is now standard, and there's a new pattern for the standard upholstery. The steering wheel has been updated and there are now two 100-watt USB ports in the rear of the center console. What was just a sunroof two years ago is now a panoramic sunroof.
Also standard for your $87,000---augmented video for navigation, a cargo cover, power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, electric-folding third-row seat, four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, keyless go, a Burmester surround sound audio system, a surround view camer, PARKTRONIC with active parking assist, and a comprehensive suite of active safety features.
Our test vehicle arrived with another $10,230 in extra-cost options: The black leather upholstery for $1,620, natural grain grey oak wood trim for $160, 22-inch AMG multispoke wheels for $1,350, MB-Tex upper dash and door trim for $350, a heated steering wheel for $250, the Night Package (black front splitter, grille trim, rear diffuser, side mirrors, window trim and roof rails) for $400, the Acoustic Comfort Package (increased cabin insulation, windshield with infrared-reflecting film and side windows with acoustic and infrared-absorbing film) for $1,100, the AMG Line Package (AMG body styling, including body-colored wheel arches and AMG wheels) for $3,250 and Exclusive Trim (multicontour front seats with massage function, rapid-heating front seats and heated rear seats) for $1,750.
Bottom line on the window sticker: $97,230.
So, no----the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 is no longer a bargain. But it is a remarkable value among luxury SUVs, which is right where it has always belonged.
